Govt plans to do away with multiple certifications for food products, only FSSAI nod mandatory

According to reports, the Indian Government has ratified changes to the standard regulations, which need only one certification from the regulator FSSAI for food products. FSSAI Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced that it will issue a draft notice and request feedback from all people who are affected before finalizing the modifications. The goal is to allow firms’ ability to do business more efficiently by utilizing the concept of ‘One Country, One Commodity with one regulatory authority’.

The government has given its approval for various changes to food safety as well as the standard regulations. They state there is only one safety regulator FSSAI is required for food products. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will release a draft notification on this issue and seek feedback from the stakeholders before making final modifications.

Food products require certification from BIS. Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and AGMARK is not needed when these amendments are accepted

In a press release, the Health Ministry issued a statement. Health Ministry said the FSSAI at its 43rd session voted to approve several changes that will enhance food safety as well as the standard rules.

The meeting was conducted under the direction of Chief Minister of Health in the Union, Apurva Chandra.

The ministry has said it that “only FSSAI certification would be mandatory for food products following finalisation of the amendments.”

This change will make it easier to manage the operation of businesses through the concept that of “One Nation one Commodity One Regulator’.

“Various amendments across different food safety and standards regulations were approved in the meeting to do away with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) or AGMARK certification for food products,” the statement read.

Once the amendments are in place, the food industry won’t have to submit applications to numerous authorities to obtain certifications that are mandatory and only FSSAI’s certification will be required for food products.
