The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office (JKBO) recently conducted a Two-Day Capsule Course for Quality Control Personnel (QCPs) within the Cement Industry on August 30-31, 2023, at Hotel Four Points in Srinagar. This informative program witnessed the participation of technical experts from all cement industries operating in the Kashmir region.
Pankaj Atri, Joint Director of BIS JKBO, commenced the event with a warm welcome address. He underscored the central aim of the Capsule Course: to bolster the industry’s capabilities and elevate the quality ecosystem across the nation. Atri explained that this specialized training initiative would equip QCPs with essential knowledge about cement requirements, sampling and testing methodologies for various cement types, the e-Portal of BIS for efficient online management of ISI Mark licenses, and BIS Guidelines for the effective implementation of Conformity Assessment Schemes. He encouraged all participants to fully utilize this tailored program to enhance their expertise and testing skills.
Niraj Mishra, Assistant Director at JKBO, delivered a comprehensive presentation on Cement Chemistry. His discussion covered diverse cement types categorized by their chemical compositions and applications, various cement manufacturing processes, and critical quality control checkpoints for efficient production. He also elaborated on the requirements and testing procedures stipulated in Indian Standards for Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), along with insights from its Product Manual. Following this, Pankaj Atri, Joint Director, JKBO, conducted a demonstration of the e-BIS portal, Know your Standards webpage, and the BIS Care App.
During the course’s duration, participants were given the opportunity to visit the laboratory of M/s Khyber Industries Pvt Ltd, located in Khonmoh, a prominent OPC manufacturer in the region. Here, they engaged in discussions and hands-on demonstrations related to the chemical and physical testing of cement.
The program also encouraged QCPs to share their personal experiences in manufacturing and testing cement, fostering a dynamic exchange of insights and best practices within the industry.
The participants expressed their gratitude for BIS’s initiative in organizing these training sessions for the industry. They lauded the program’s methodology, which combined theoretical knowledge with practical applications, enabling a well-rounded understanding of cement quality control.
