Safety first: FSSAI imparts training to food handlers of government canteens

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has begun to train Food handlers at the Bhawans in all States and Union Territories, and government canteens in offices within the capital city.

They have trained food handlers in Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Sikkim Bhawans. A new training program is scheduled specifically for Bhawans of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Manipur.

It is possible to find Bhawans of 34 states and UTs that are situated in the capital city. According to an FSSAI official, the intention is to include all states.

The training program for food handlers is conducted as part of FSSAI’s efforts to enhance the food safety system through the implementation of its most popular training program called Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) which was developed to offer instruction to food handlers who work in the food industry.

In the course of four hours of training, participants were instructed about food safety rules and the rules for maintaining hygiene at home and managing allergens in relation to food processing and control, as well as records, labels and methods of training and the most recent advancements in the food and drink industry.

FSSAI has also provided the opportunity to train food handlers in the Department of Personnel and Training, North Block. “These training programmes are aimed at enhancing food safety standards across state/UT Bhawans and canteens of government offices,” an official announcement stated as well as, “It will be a significant step towards fostering a safer and healthier food environment for citizens of India.”

This move is in conjunction with the promise of education for 25 thousands of food industry professionals by FSSAI within three years, a promise that was made by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, on World Food Safety Day last year.

The aim is to establish the environment for improving and learning in the field of agriculture. The students who finish the course are recognized with The Food Safety Supervisor certification recognized throughout India. Between 2023 and 2023-24, 358,224 people were educated through this FoSTaC program.

Establishing Standards

The program that trains food handlers is conducted as part of FSSAI’s efforts to improve its entire food security system. This is done through its flagship program which is focused specifically on food safety training and Certification that is designed to give guidance to food handlers for the sector of food. In the period 2023-23, FSSAI has trained 3,58,224 food handlers under the program.
