In a recent search and seizure operation conducted at a saw mill in Perumbavoor, officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) made a significant discovery. They seized a large quantity of plywood, available in various types and sizes, which were spuriously marked with the ISI (Indian Standards Institute) certification.
During the operation, it was revealed that the plywood manufacturer was employing counterfeit ISI marks on both general-purpose plywood and marine plywood. These marks were associated with either expired license numbers or completely fake license numbers. Approximately 20 tonnes of such unlawfully marked plywood, consisting of over 1,100 boards, were confiscated. Additionally, the authorities found screen-printing stencils used to falsely apply the ISI mark on these products.
The misuse of the ISI mark or any claim of conformity to Indian Standards without a valid BIS license is a punishable offense. Manufacturers are obligated to obtain a license from the BIS to utilize the prestigious ISI mark, which signifies adherence to the highest quality standards. However, this mark is only permitted for products explicitly listed within the approved scope by the BIS.
The authorities are taking immediate action to penalize those responsible for this violation. It has been observed that these spuriously ISI-marked products were being sold to customers at inflated prices, resulting in substantial profits for the offenders.
